ALPAMAYO TREKKING TOUR
AIATT
Starting and ending in the capital city of Lima, this tour gives you a couple
of days to see the sites around Huaraz before taking on this extraordinary
trek which circles Alpamayo, Huandoy, Taulliraju and Huascaran, while
crossing passes between 4500m and 4800m. You hike through the Quenual
(typical Andean shrub), while in deep canyons, where green and turquoise
lagoons reflect the sparkling glaciers. Above are villages, where the
peasants attempt to harvest their crops. The mountains are covered
with "ice flutes" (incredible ice-formations hanging from
the slopes).

Day Four: HUARAZ - CHAVIN
A day tour to the site of Chavin de Huantar. The Chavin Culture is the oldest, major culture in Peru (1300 - 400 BC). The ruins at Chavin de Huantar consist of a large main square which has a staircase leading into the "Castillo". This is a three-storey, 13 metre high building which houses many chambers and tunnels - many of them underground. There are no windows or doors (other than the main entrance) but the whole complex was so well-designed that there is virtually no mustiness. A 4 metre high stone dagger can be found in the heart of the building.
