Our group used Aventura Quechua for a custom climbing and trekking trip of 11 days through the Vilcanota Range. Carlos and his crew covered every detail without fail. He handled everything from airport pick-up and Machu Picchu tickets to all of the logistics or a trek from Tinqui through to Pitumarca. Our cook, Domingo, surpassed the skill of all prior cooks we've hired over the course of 6 prior trips to the Andes. Arrieros Leo and Rocque covered every pack train need and many more tasks that just made the trip come together. Driver and facilitator John covered road transportation and miscellaneous needs on time, on route, and without a hitch, every time.
Simply said, Carlos and his crew met every logistical need and constructed a smooth custom trip, from airport pick-up to airport drop-off. I recommend him without reservation. For additional details as to our experience with Aventura Quechua please see the peru 2011 narrative at www.climbingwithbob.com.
Kayaking on Lake Titicaca, and especially by the archipelago Anapia, is no risk and requires no real technical difficulty. Indeed Anapia lies in the "small" part of Lake Titicaca, dubbed "Wiñaymarkha. Being here in this "small" part of the lake protects us from the sometimes strong winds blowing on the other side of the lake, where the tourist islands of Taquile and Amantani. Moreover, as we are in an archipelago (one of only across the lake), we are protected from the winds by the islands, sailing mostly in the morning, and especially without ever being too far from the mainland. Finally, the continued presence of boats around us is a guarantee of security and convenience. No previous experience in sea kayaking is therefore necessary to fully enjoy these two days, especially as the boats are available to those who do not wish to paddle.
We depart from Puno early in the morning. We make a quick stop along the way at Chuicuito, which has a great site called the "Temple of Fertility." After visiting we drive along Lake Titicaca on a road with gorgeous scenery (2 hours drive away). At Punta Hermosa, we board a boat belonging to the community Anapia. It takes more than an hour by boat from the shores of Lake Titicaca to reach the archipelago Anapia. On our arrival on the main island, we settle into our respective family houses.
After breakfast we find the small village dock, the true umbilical cord of Anapia. We leave for 2 days with our kayaks, accompanied by traditional sailing ships providing logistics. We start out from the reeds and "patos (ducks) on calm waters, clear and blue on Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world.
Lake Titicaca covers about 8 562 km ², of which 4 772 km ² are in the Peruvian territory and the rest (3 790) in Bolivia. Its length is 204 km, its width of 65 km. Located between 3 809 and 3 811 meters above sea level, it has an average depth of 107 meters and a maximum depth of 284 meters. Over twenty-five rivers flow into the lake. The lake has forty-one islands, some of which are inhabited. The total length of its sides is 1 125 kilometers. In other words, we discover a small part of this huge lake!
We set our first camp by the island of Ccaño
After our early breakfast, you will continue paddling towards the island that is mostly inhabited by the Vicuñas, in the afternoon you will have to hike around teh island and enjoy the sunset.
Kayaking in the middle of this lake is undoubtedly one of the strongest moments of the trip. The reverb is intense and the Cordillera Real in Bolivia, peaking at over 6000 meters, impressed by its size and colors that are constantly changing throughout the day. All our days on the lake are dominated by this unique landscape.
You have the option of paddling from Yuspique Island all the way to Punta Hermosa or returning with the boat. This is a hard paddle of about 5 hours, but a nice way to end the journey. Your transport will be waiting for you to take you back to Puno.
